Ranjan Gogoi Biography
Justice Ranjan Gogoi is a judge of the Supreme Court of India since April, 2012. He is appointed as the Chief Justice of India by the president and will take the oath on 3 October 2018. Prior to his present post, he was the Chief Justice, Punjab and Haryana High Court.
On 13 September 2018, Justice Gogoi was appointed to be the 46th Chief Justice of India and is scheduled to assume office from 3 October 2018.

Ranjan Gogoi Controversies
On 12 January 2018, Justices Ranjan Gogoi along with Justices J Chelameswar, M B Lokur, and Kurian Joseph of the Supreme Court of India, for the first time in the history of the Supreme Court, held a press conference, showed problems prevailing in the Supreme Court, failure in the justice delivery system and allocation of cases.
Ranjan Gogoi and the bench received a lot of criticism on the Judgement of Soumya Murder and Rape Casein which they set aside the death sentence awarded by the trial court to the accused.

Lesser Known Fact About Ranjan Gogoi
Justice Gogoi was enrolled at the Bar in 1978 and practised at the Gauhati High Court of which he was made a Permanent Judge on 28 February 2001.
He was transferred to the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 9 September 2010 and became its Chief Justice on 12 February 2011.
He was elevated as a Judge of the Supreme Court on 23 April 2012.
His father, Keshab Chandra Gogoi was the Chief Minister of Assam.
On 5 August 1998, he lost his father.
On May, 2016 , the bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice PC Pant passed an order On Re-assessment of Income of Amitabh Bachchan for the year 2002-03.
A bench led by Justice Gogoi also handled the case of JNU student Kanhaiya Kumar.
He with the bench passed the judgement that introduced new electoral reforms by ruling that no one can contest elections without making a full and honest disclosure about his/her assets, educational, and criminal antecedents.
He is the successor of Chief Justice Dipak Misra for the office of the Chief Justice of India holding the office from October 2018-November 2019.
